    Detoxification or ‘detox’ is the process of clearing toxins and excess congestion from the body. Many of these toxins come from a poor diet, drug use, and environmental exposure. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, male or female – everyone can benefit from detoxing their body. As well as improving health you will also find an added benefit when you detox your body – weight loss and an overall improvement in the condition of your skin, hair, nails and general wellbeing.

    One of the best ways to kick-start your metabolism and cleanse your body of toxins is to cut out all processed foods. The human body is designed to consume liquids more than solids. It makes sense then, that every fruit and vegetable that humans eat is over 70 per cent liquid.

    But strangely we find that in this modern age people prefer to eat over-processed, fat-rich, nutrient-deficient ‘junk food’. This causes many problems for consumers such as lethargy, weight gain, and poor health. These foods lend themselves to a weakened digestive system. If you have any of the symptoms below, it is time to detox your body:

    • Feeling tired and lethargic most of the time
    • Regularly feeling bloated and ‘gassy’
    • Inability to digest foods easily and constipation
    • Elevated levels of insulin
    • Poor skin condition
    • Weight gain
    • Asthma, eczema or hayfever

    Of course, even if you consider yourself to be fit and healthy, detoxing is a great way to give you extra energy as everyone is prone to toxins. For you to detox your body effectively, a strict seven day detox is recommended to remove the unwanted heavy metals and toxins in your system. If you cannot manage seven days, a shorter detox of between 1-3 days will allow you to reap some benefits too.

    There are some basic rules of detoxing that need to be adhered to: ensure you cut out all processed foods including white bread, white pasta, refined sugars, alcohol, tobacco, salt and caffeine. Instead, concentrate on fresh fruit and vegetables, salad and plenty of water to flush your system.
