Belly fat – the bane of ever man and woman and the cause of many a muffin top! What makes it so hard to lose weight from the belly? Why is belly fat so hard to shift? And more importantly, how do we get rid of excess belly fat?
The answer lies in two little things. Firstly in your food and secondly in the way your body burns fat. To get rid of excess belly fat involves eating lean protein such as eggs, tuna, fish, chicken and white protein. Cut the red meat down to a minimum as it is full of saturated fat and clogs your arteries as well as fattens up your middle. You should also really reduce your carb intake and drink lots of water.
A sedentary lifestyle causes your belly to sag due to a loss of muscle tone. If you increase your overall activity levels in addition to a minimum of 20 minutes exercise a day, you are well on your way to slimming down your gut.
Be inventive – if you have a desk job, make a point of getting up and walking around the office every 30 minutes – not only will it get you moving, but it will also clear your head ready for your next task. One tip I learnt and still do is to go up and down a flight of stairs as fast as you can every hour. Even at your desk, do circles with your feet to get circulation going as poor circulation also affects how fat is laid down in your body.
In terms of proper exercise, get yourself moving by playing sports, go to the gym or my favourite – power walking/running. All you need is a pair of good trainers and your good to go. Put on some music and dance round the house – anything, just make sure you get hot and sweaty for 20 minutes a day and your done.
Think about it like this: you cannot get rid of excess belly fat unless you make lifelong dietary and fitness changes. A flat belly is not about fads, but consistent hard work.
