    High protein low carb diets are not new. They have been around many years now and seem to be the diet of choice if you have lots of weight to shift. It is important to remember some rules about these types of diets though in order to make them more successful.

    Firstly, high protein low carb diets work because they deprive the body of a major energy source – carbs. Carbs break down into sugar to fuel the body. Any sugar which is not used is immediately stored as fat. This is why those people who love their carbs seem to have a bigger middle – its where all those excess carbs are stored.

    Some good approaches to this type of plan include:

    • Limit your overall carb intake by cutting down how much you eat
    • Swap bad carbs for good carbs i.e swap white flour and starch based carbs for whole meal and whole grain carbs instead
    • Try doing one carb free meal a day. This can be any meal, but to get the best effect, cut your carbs from your last meal to keep the calories down. This is because you move less during the evening and is the time when you are most likely to put weight on
    • Keep your cooking methods low fat to further cut calories. Do not use oil
    • Do not add additional fat, cheese or other fattening items to your food
    • Eat lean protein such as white meats, eggs and cottage cheese
    • Avoid red meat which is high in saturated fat
    • Eat some protein with every meal to boost your metabolism
    • Avoid carb snacks and eat fruit or low fat yogurts instead
    • Eat lots of vegetables and salad with meals
    • Drink lots of water to keep well hydrated and prevent hunger

    A high protein low carb diet will not only cut the carbs down drastically, but also cut the calories too. This accelerates weight loss and in particular fat loss. Coupled with exercise, you are well on your way to achieving a great body.
