During pregnancy, your primary concern is keeping yourself healthy by eating well and looking after yourself. Pregnancy and fitness is something that is becoming increasingly popular as a way of maintaining good health and fitness.

To maintain good health, you should focus on general fitness which is easy and attainable at any level of fitness. The best starting exercises which are recommended for those new to fitness are power walking and swimming.

Power walking is great because it gets you outside in the fresh air, takes little effort and can be done anywhere. You do not need to waste money on expensive gym memberships, and once your baby is born, it can be invaluable for shifting your baby bulge.

Swimming is a fantastic way of maintaining your overall pregnancy and fitness levels as it works all the major muscles in your body. The water also helps support your bump, making it more comfortable to workout. Water has the additional benefit of keeping you cool so there is no danger of overheating.

Some key pointers with pregnancy and fitness include:

    • Always keep well hydrated as dehydration during pregnancy is dangerous
    • Always stop if it hurts. Exercise should not be painful
    • Sudden headaches, dizziness, blackouts and fainting can be a sign of an underlying problem, so seek medical advice immediately
    • If working out causes contractions, abdominal pain, a severe stitch or pain in the pelvic region, see your physician immediately
    • Bleeding or leaking fluid caused by working out needs urgent attention – dial 911
    • As you get larger, your body is more susceptible to injury, always wear supportive trainers and a sports bra and never, ever push yourself
    • Keep cool at all times – if it is a hot day, seek shade and cover up with a sunhat and sun block. Drink lots of fluid and do not work out in the heat

It is important to realize that exercise during pregnancy should be safe and fun. If you have any concerns, see your obstetrician, and always get the advice of a doctor before starting any fitness program.

    • The physical benefits of Pilates exercise should be obvious to most people. Pilates exercise offers everybody the opportunity to improve their breathing, gain more balance, improve coordination, develop a healthy spine, lose weight or control body weight, shape the body, and develop strong muscles.

    • Hi, I am 12 weeks pregnant and getting really bad headaches. I know you are “allowed” to take Tylenol, but I’m trying to avoid taking anything while pregnant. I’m wondering if other people have had this and any suggestions to treat it other than medication. Also, does it last the whole pregnancy or just the first trimester or so? Thanks!

    • i getting pregnancy, i have pcos problem. What can ı do?

    • Hi Alice,

It is always best to discuss this matter with your doctor.

Thankfully, a number of PCOS treatments are available today that can help you manage the disease. However, the single most important PCOS treatment is to lose weight if you are overweight. By reducing calories and simple sugars, increasing lean protein and fiber and beginning a regular exercise routine, you can help your body increase it’s response to insulin, and possibly decrease androgen production. This may help reduce symptoms, restore normal menses and make it easier to conceive. While there are medications that can help manage the symptoms you are experiencing, losing weight is the best thing you can do to help treat the disease.

      Kind Regards,
      Mark

    • Thanks for the information.
