Pregnancy is a wonderfully exciting time as you are nurturing a new life. One of the main concerns of pregnancy other than keeping healthy is keeping fit. There are lots of suitable pregnancy workouts that you can do to help maintain a fit pregnancy.
When you are pregnant, your body releases a hormone called relaxin. This loosens your joints and prepares your body for childbirth. In particular, women complain of weak and aching joints in their third trimester, as this is when relaxin really starts being pumped through the body.
Because of hormonal changes, it is essential that pregnancy workouts are tailored to grow with you and help ease the pressure from your joints. You are more likely to injure yourself during your third trimester as your center of gravity shifts to accommodate your growing bump.
An all round excellent exercise for your body is swimming. The water helps support your bump and you will find working out in water easier than working out on land. Look out for aqua-natal classes being held by your local childbirth association. These sessions deliver excellent pregnancy workouts which can be modified according to your needs.
Another excellent workout throughout all stages of pregnancy is Pilates. Pilates is brilliant for keeping your abdominal muscles strong – a real necessity for helping deal with contractions during labor. The other major benefit is that it tones all of your muscles gently without straining your joints.
Pre-natal yoga is one of the better pregnancy workouts since it not only helps to control breathing and make your muscles strong, but your pelvic floor is strengthened which assits you during labor. Some of the other main benefits of both yoga and Pilates is that women report that their abdominal and pelvic muscles shape up very quickly after birth. This is especially true if these workouts are maintained after delivery.
Power walking is yet another excellent example of a pregnancy workout that is easy to do and takes very little time or effort. With only a good supportive sports bra and a comfortable pair of trainers, you can maintain your fitness throughout pregnancy by doing just 20-30 minutes a day.
