    The Atkins diet, in a nutshell, aims to induce a change in your body’s metabolism, causing you to lose weight.

    The founder, Dr. Atkins, explains that excessive consumption of carbohydrates should be reduced; we burn carbs first rather than fat as a form of energy. Therefore if carbs are eliminated or very limited in our diets, our body will use fat stores as its first fuel for energy.

    Once this process is in place, known as ketosis, your craving for carbohydrates should subside because ketones are effectively being burned first. They pass through your perspiration and urine, making you burn excess fat.

    Your diet will change throughout the different phases of the diet. For example in phase one you’re limited to 20gs of carbs a day- this can be found in veg.

    The objective is to increase your carb intake by 5gs each week as you enter a new phase of ongoing weight loss.

    Eventually you will lose enough to stop doing this. Then you simply reduce 5gs from your regular intake to ensure the weight loss is sustained.

    Dr. Atkins’s diet is great for people who suffer from migraines, slow digestion, allergies to food and blood sugar disorders. Many thousands who suffer from diabetes and heart disease have overcome their health problems through the Atkins diet.

    It was launched in 1972 by the doctor despite being contrary to most other diets of the time, proposing the opposite intake of food i.e. high carb intake.
