Not all diet plans were created equal. Take the Atkins diet for example – although users lost staggering amounts of weight on this diet, the side effects were unpleasant and unhealthy. The best low carb diet plan does not expect a complete ban on carbs, but simply a limitation of it.
When you stick to an all protein diet, the weight you lose is fantastic because you can lose an incredible amount of weight in record time. However, these types of plans are unrealistic and unhealthy in the long run. They are fine if you want to lose a lot of weight quickly before a special event, but it is not advised you do these types of diets for more than ten days at most.
A low carb diet plan should not be a ‘no carb diet plan’. Protein only diets can cause long term kidney problems because the kidneys find it difficult to deal with the amount of ketones (a byproduct of high protein plans) that pass through them and this can lead to long term damage.
The best low carb diet plan includes a balance of fresh fruit, salad and vegetables to complement the protein and to make up for the absence of carbs. Certain fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, bananas and yam are off the menu because of their high starch based carbs.
To get the balance right, you should aim for meals that are very low in carbs. A good way to do this is by limiting carbs to the morning. Instead of two slices of white toast with butter, you have one slice of wholemeal toast with low fat spread and a boiled egg.
This way, not only do you reduce your carbs, but you are also curbing your hunger by having a boiled egg. This keeps you fuller for longer. Wholemeal bread prevents constipation and releases energy slowly into your body. This prevent you reaching for the vending machine between meals!
Keep other meals simple. You should have vegetables and salad with a portion of protein. Fruit is best left as a snack between meals.
